Family Doctor

The Family Doctor website provides information on a variety of health conditions and complaints.  The articles are written by doctors in New Zealand and there is an excellent section on 'Elderly Health' that details topics ranging from cholesterol, to glaucoma, to Parkinson's Disease and many more.

Family Services - NZ Government Website

The Ministry of Social Development has, with the active support of local authorities, community organisations and DHBs around the country, assembled a database of services and programmes that support families.
"Services" might include information, advice, delivery of specific services such as counselling, assessment, well child and/or clinical services, support or mentoring, rehabilitation, co-ordination of these various services (where a multiple approach is necessary). "Programmes" might include, for example, parenting programmes, training or education courses, residential programmes.
They do not propose listing agencies that do not provide services and programmes, but simply lobby or advocate.  Nor will the database (certainly initially) have information easily found in the phonebook such as addresses of doctors, midwives, hospitals, nursing homes, child-care services, schools, or homes for the aged.

The new database is located on the new Family and Community Services website www.familyservices.govt.nz (National Directory) which opened on 1 July.

Healthline

This is a reminder that the Ministry of Health launched Healthline as a nation-wide programme earlier this year.  Healthline is a free telephone health information service that assesses a caller’s health needs and gives information and advice to assist someone on the type of health care they need. 

The Healthline call centre is staffed by registered nurses.  The nurses do not diagnose or treat health problems over the phone but can advise the most appropriate level of care for each caller.

 The number to call is 0800 611 116.

Healthpoint

Healthpoint is a tool that allows doctors, patients and caregivers to access local information about what to expect prior to, during and following a referral to secondary/tertiary medical healthcare services.

The information about a service is approved and regularly reviewed by clinicians from that individual service.

Healthpoint provides information about:

  • the general location e.g. where to go, how to get there, where to park, available services
  • the appointment e.g. what to expect during a specific assessment or procedure
  • the consultants working in that service including: contact details, qualifications, subspecialties (some organisations do not provide this information)
  • surgical service information e.g who operates where and which surgical procedures are performed there
  • other useful information including: patient rights, support groups, government organisations.

Health and Disability Commissioner

The Health and Disability Commissioner Act 1994 was established to provide standards of care in New Zealand. The Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers' Rights include respect, fair treatment, dignity and independence, appropriate standards, effective communication, information, choice and consent, support, rights during teaching and research and having your complaints taken seriously. Everyone using a health and disability service has the protection of these rights.  

An independent Commissioner promotes and protects these rights under the Health and Disability Commissioner Act 1994.  Independent Advocates are also available to support consumers to uphold their rights under this Act.  For further information visit the Health and Disability Commissioner Website.

The website looks at injury prevention, and offers a wealth of topics, papers, and journal articles and research.  Well worth the look.

Maori Health

This site called Maori Health seeks to provide information About Maori Health and highlight the policies, programmes and people Addressing Māori Health.  

The Māori philosophy towards health is based on a wellness or holistic health model. For many Māori the major deficiency in modern health services is taha wairua (spiritual dimension).

Māori health models include whare tapa whā : where the four cornerstones (or sides) of Māori health are whānau (family health) tinana (physical health) hinengaro (mental health) and wairua (spiritual health).

Research Medicines Industry Association of New Zealand

The RMI Association of New Zealand represents most of the pharmaceutical companies that manufacture and distribute prescription medicines in New Zealand.  They have a website where they publish a Guide to NZ Pharmaceutical Industry, Healthfacts - an annual publication summarising key facts about the NZ Health sector, briefing papers on different aspects of medicines and a news section.   They also have links to other informative websites.

University of Auckland Injury Prevention Research Centre (IPRC) 

The IPRC recently updated its webpages. The revamped site is excellent and well worth a visit - you may wish to put it on your 'Favourites' browser list.  The site lists all publications produced by the IPRC and provides access to all recent centre reports and fact sheets as pdf files. Recent news and events from the centre are to be added to the What's New page on a regular basis, as will information on studies currently being undertaken at the centre.

Statistics New Zealand

Statistics New Zealand gives an overview of older people in New Zealand, including Health Issues, Employment, Disability and type of residence.

Statistics New Zealand has recently been  appointed New Zealand's Injury Information Manager, with the aim of combining all the available injury information to produce injury statistics that will be a basis for a more comprehensive system of monitoring and preventing injuries.  One of the first things they have done is to set up a homepage for injury statistics, which is located at http://www.stats.govt.nz/injury. This page currently provides information about the Injury Data integration project,  and will eventually be the home page for official New Zealand injury statistics.

United Way was established internationally in 1887 and has operated in New Zealand since 1975.  Their vision is to improve quality of life through voluntary giving and action. They are an independent, non-religious, non-political, volunteer based organisation which works alongside individuals, businesses and the community, to provide funding assistance, volunteer time and necessary skills to help local human welfare charities. The Australian website www.healthinformation.com.au  is an evidenced-based website that offers no medical advice but points people to further medical websites, both Orthodox and Natural, in Australia and Overseas.   After Loretta Marron, a retired Computer Professional was diagnosed with cancer, she and her GP put this site together for patients and their GP's.

Resource Directory for Older People

 Although it is an American website, it is a useful resource. The Resource Directory for Older People is designed to help people find the information they need. A cooperative effort of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the Administration on Aging (AoA), the directory is intended to serve a wide audience including health and legal professionals, social service providers, librarians, and researchers, as well as older people and their families. The directory contains organizational names, addresses, phone numbers, and fax numbers, as well as email and website addresses.
